Maybe rallying can never be completely safe for the competitor but for spectators there are some simple personal safeguards which you can follow so that you are not putting yourself at risk. I ask you, for your own sakes, please think where you watch from, do not take risks to get the best view or the best photo. Listen to the marshals and never argue with them. Follow paths that have been made for you and don’t please wander about in the stage and try and get out of the way just as a car is coming. I know you love our sport, and our sport would be nothing without you, but do not put yourself and our sport at risk. Use that British common sense!”

Enniskillen Motor Club - JLT/MSA Club of the Year 2018
Enniskillen Motor Club Ltd [EMC] has come out on top to clinch the JLT/MSA Club of the Year 2018! EMC, which was established in 1964, beat off opposition from some the other 720 clubs in all of the UK to emerge victorious. Representing EMC at the huge gala night in MSA HQ in Pall Mall in London were a proud trio of committee members; Club President Drew Wilson, Vice President Ron Neely and Chairman Wendy Blackledge. The banquet was held at the end of January and Drew Wilson enthused that, ‘EMC had been placed in the top six in the UK a few years ago but this was something else, to come out top out of 720 clubs and to be feted at such a glittering banquet was something special and a just reward for all the hard work, dedication and commitment to motorsport in Fermanagh and beyond shown by EMC over the past fifty four years.’
Chairman, Wendy Blackledge remarked that receiving this prestigious award came at the end of another very successful season for EMC in motorsport. The Club, with thirty committee members, has always striven to provide good quality events in here in Co Fermanagh to attract competitors to come and enjoy what we have to offer. So roll on 2019 as EMC plan to continue to organise six local events, assist neighbouring clubs and hand over a sizeable donation to a chosen local charity as in previous years.
Another top prize winner in 2018 was Enniskillen clubman John Comiskey. John who hails from Leitrim is known the length and breadth of these islands for his efforts in assisting at all levels of motorsport from Chief Marshal of the Trailer Parts and Spares Lakeland Stages 2018 to marshalling at Wales Rally GB emerged as JLT/MSA Volunteer of the Year 2018. Typically he dedicated his great win to all the teams of marshals and time-keepers who assist on the day-to-day running of events.

Enniskillen MC donate £1,000 to The Isish Sarcoidosis Support Network
Wendy Watson receiving cheque for £1,000 towards the local branch of The Irish Sarcoidosis Support Network from Wendy Blackledge EMC Chairman and Drew Wilson Club President
Each year Enniskillen Motor Club [EMC] donates a percentage of the takings from their May Day Stages Rally held on St Angelo Airfield to a chosen local charity. This year the charity chosen by the Motor Club was the local branch of The Irish Sarcoidosis Support Network. On an awards night held in Sadlers Restaurant recently the club invited the local representative, Wendy Watson, along to receive a donation and to inform the Club about her organisation. On the night Wendy gave a short talk on sarcoidosis and the numbers of local people affected by this little known condition. She outlined that there was limited support available in N Ireland and consequently the small local group was affiliated to the Irish Sarcoidosis Support Network. She went on to thank the club for their generous donation of £1,000 on the night and wished the Club every success for 2019.
Awards Night & Presentations
Wednesday 12th December in the Horseshoe & Sadlers Bar Enniskillen
Enniskillen Motor Club [EMC] had a lot to cheer about recently as they celebrated their 2018 Club Awards night in Sadler’s Restaurant. Club President Drew Wilson was his usual slick MC for the evening and Chairman Wendy Blackledge handed over four awards plus a sizeable cheque to the local branch of the Irish Sarcoidosis Support Network. After a very tasty meal Wilson called for a round of applause for the special guest of the evening, ex-President and co-founder Austin Frazer, before summoning Lisbellaw man Darragh Sheridan first to the podium to receive his EMC Champion Co-Driver of the Year for 2018 award. The popular young Devenish College student has this year co-driven for his Dad Gary in their immaculate Vauxhall Nova on the McAleer’s Spar Erne Safari Navigation Rally and also for his friend William Graham in his agile little Class 3 Vauxhall Corsa on the Erne skip Hire and Recycling May Day Stages and the Trailer Parts and Spares Lakeland Stages. Next up was Derek Mackarel from Monaghan to receive the EMC Champion Junior Driver of the Year for 2018. Derek has shown a spectacular turn of speed in his Class 4 Vauxhall Nova both on the tarmac stages of St Angelo Airport and on the loose of the forests both in Fermanagh and in Carn Quarry in 2018. The EMC Champion Driver Award for 2018 was claimed by Dean Humphrey from Drumquin who also steers a very rapid Corsa. Next in line was the EMC award to the person, outside of the EMC committee, whom the Club has judged to have made the most valuable contribution to the running of events for the past year. In 2018 this person was the very deserving Arlene Robinson from Irvinestown. The club Chairman, Wendy Blackledge commended Arlene for her enthusiasm and dedication at all six events run by the Motor Club in 2018. At this juncture President Wilson asked Wendy Watson to come to the stage to receive a cheque for the sum of £1,100 donated this year by EMC to their chosen charity; the local branch of The Irish Sarcoidosis Support Network. Wendy spoke briefly about the background of her organisation, the condition itself and those who are helped by the efforts of the local branch. Wendy then thanked EMC for choosing her charity for 2018 and wished the club success for the upcoming year. For more information on this condition go to www.isarc.ie or e-mail: [email protected]. Then came the surprise announcement from Drew that that the Club had lifted First Overall in the JLT Motorsport UK Club of the Year Awards 2018!!! This was, he stated with undeniable pride, first out of some 720 clubs in the whole of the UK! The announcement was greeted with a standing ovation and sustained applause from the committee and guests present. The Club will receive this prestigious award plus some £1,500 cash at a gala dinner in London in January 2019. As if this wasn’t enough excitement for one night the news also broke that popular clubman John Comiskey had won the JLT Volunteer of the Year Award for 2018. As well as being assisting on EMC events this year John has been Stage Commander and Marshall on a range of events such as The Ulster and the Rally GB. Again this news was greeted with much applause and excitement. Drew Wilson brought proceedings to a close remarking that 2018 was a very successful year for the club in running not only six well supported events of their own but also now receiving such prestigious awards was the icing on the cake and boded well for 2019.
The Winners for 2018
Montgomery Motorsport-Backed Sprint Resounding Success!!
Enniskillen Motor Club’s Darran Flanagan, Event Manager, hailed this year’s Fermanagh Festival of Speed incorporating the Montgomery Motorsport Erne Trophy Sprint as a runaway success. While Omagh man Adrian Pollock set a blistering pace in his extremely rapid Dallara F301 on the track to claim the overall title and set a new record by 0.024 seconds local man Ross McLean lifted the Car of the Show title in the inaugural Show and Shine category of the day, with his gleaming 3 Series BMW. Other Show and Shine prizes handed out included the Best Truck, the Best Modified Car and the Best Bike went to James Devlin for his very well turned out Ducati 999.
On the track Pollock was the man to beat all day long, fastest in practice and then when it counted; his Fastest Time of the Day leaving him with a gap of over 6 seconds from second placed Steven Gault in his Reynard 903 with the spectacular Gerard O’Connell in his twin Hayabusa-engined Radical SR8 a mere 1.09 seconds adrift in third. Back in 1972 Adrian’s father, Rob, also won the Sprint albeit in a Mini Cooper ‘S’. This win for Pollock means he now stands a great chance of clinching the SW Adair NI Sprint Championship with only one more round at Kirkistown remaining.
In the Road-Going Series Production Cars up to 1700cc: Class 1 the win went to Garry McClurg in a Citroen AX while the winner in Class 2: Road-Going over 1700cc was Chris Rogan in his immaculate and colourful Renault Megane RS 250. Class 3: Road-Going Series Production Cars 4WD was won by Paul Montgomery in a Subaru Sti Type R with Enniskillen’s Chris McCarthy taking 3rd in Class in a Subaru Impreza. Class 6A Modified Series Production Cars 8valve and 2WD was claimed by a veteran of St Angelo, Omagh’s Gary Milligan, in his 1400 Mini with another Sprint veteran Seskinore’s Roy Coulter second in his Peugeot 205 GTI. Enniskillen man Barry Murphy brought hid Sunbeam into 5th in this class. In Class 6B: Modified Series Production Cars Multivalve 2WD EMC’s Eldoras Elgerius brought his standard Ford Focus home in 7th place while Dermot O’Hagan took the class win in his very rapid Honda Civic. Class 7 Modified Specialist Production Cars 2WD was a perfect example of the wide variety of stunning vehicles competing at this year’s Sprint. The Class win was taken by Clive Latimer in his Sylva Riot while second was Steven Hawthorne in a Locost Megablade. You simply will not see these cars in action anywhere else unless you travel to Bishopscourt, Kirkistown or Mondela racetracks. In Class 8A Colin Kane from Springfield rolled his Toyota Yaris in spectacular fashion on his first Timed Run and thus did not have a recorded time and the win went to the Maguire Mini of Ian Howard. Thankfully Colin remained in good form and able to chat about his roll later in the day. In the Class 8B battle David Aiken in his Vauxhall Nova was pushed hard by Garry Campbell in his beautiful Starlet so that Aiken came within 1.05 seconds of the Class Record to seal the win with Campbell a mere 0.20 seconds behind. In Class 9 Sports Libre Cars 2WD the sensation was Gerard O’Connell. Fresh from claiming the 2018 NI Hillclimb Championship, Gerard certainly lit up the runways at St Angelo with his ear-piercing Radical SR8. The twin Hayabusa engined Radical emitted a shattering shriek as all eight cylinders wailed at over 10,000 rpm and O’Connell fought to maintain control as the Radical squirmed under power on the dry tarmac. Spectators rushed to the first bend on the course to catch a glimpse of the Radical as it rapidly disappeared over the horizon. As a gauge it is interesting the next in Class was a single 1500 Hayabusa-engined Radical piloted by Lee Kirkwood who came in almost 15 seconds in arrears! Clabby’s Ronnie Coulter brought home his more conventional Vauxhall Astra 4th in this Class. Class 10 Sports Libre Rally Cars up to 1650cc2WD was won by Castlederg’s Alan Cassells in his beautifully turned out Peugeot 106 S1600. This terrific machine featured recently in PaceNotes Rally magazine. In Class 11 Sports Libre Rally Cars over 1650cc2WD Kesh man George Elliott brought his very pretty MkI Escort home 7th in this very competitive class. The Vauxhall engine in the Escort suffering from limiter problems all day with veteran George having to shift early at around 6500/7000 rpm instead of 8500/9000 rpm. George has competed on St Angelo in a Ford Anglia and a Mini Cooper in the past. Kevin McQuaid from Florence, having sold his MkII Escort now has a lovely Vauxhall Chevette with a 2-litre ‘redtop’ engine and he managed to bring it home in 11th place. The winner here Was Daniel Campbell in another gleaming red Starlet similar to his brother Garry except this one has a 2-litre engine whilst Garry’s has a 1400 engine[Class 8B]. Class 12 All Other $WD Sports Libre Cars was won by Ivan McCullough in his deceptively rapid Nissan GTR. John Donnelly’s challenge in the Derek Jobb rallycross Escort Cosworth failed to materialise as Donnelly didn’t manage to make a clean Timed Run. In Class 14 Racing Cars up to 2000cc 8valve or up to 1400 multivalve Beragh’s Lewis Wilson calimes the Class win in his Reynard 873 with the only female driver, Catherine Donnelly taking her Delta T91 home 4th in this Class. But the day was all about Adrian Pollock as the Omagh driver maintained calm as both Gault and O’Connell were breathing down his neck all day. He remained calm and precise to claim a well-deserved victory in Class 15 for All Other Racing Cars and the Overall Fastest Time of the day plus he set a new FTD record at 135.46 seconds. In Class 16A another r St Angelo veteran, Irvinestown’s Gerry McGarrity, took the Class win by just over 2 seconds from John Golden in a similar Cooper ‘S’ with Enniskillen man Benny Grainger bringing his Road-Rally spec Cooper home 4th in Class. In Class 16B Non Road-Going Historic Saloons and Sports Cars Stephan Strain took the honours, aptly enough in a Fermanagh registered MkI Escort with Tullyhummon’s Karl Johnston in second in the unusual Austin Midas while Enniskillen man Arthur Ovens took third in Class in his MG Midget. Class 18 Rally Cars up to 1650cc 2WD was won by Ian Duff in his Proton Compact by just 1.2 seconds from Derek Robinson in his Gp A Toyota Corolla with Sammy Scollan 3rd in his Peugeot 106. Finally, Class 19 Rally Cars over 1650 2WD, was dominated by local drivers and saw Ballinamallard’s Raymond Johnston in his Escort RS 1800 edge out Belcoo’s Damian McGauran in his self-built BMW with a Honda S2000 engine by just 0.03 seconds with Raymond’s son Marc a mere 0.43 seconds back in 3rd in his father’s RS 1800. In this highly competitive class 4th place went to Tempo’s Ronan Campbell in another Escort RS 1800 closely followed by Irvinestown’s Fabian McAleer in another RS 1800. Then making its first competitive appearance came what else but the inevitable Escort RS. This time the BDG-engined car belonged to Francis Morris. Then in 7th place came Dermot Brewster in the Astra GSI he shares with EMC’s Brian Darcy. Brian brought the Astra home in one piece and in 9th place with 8th being taken by Thomas McGauran, Damian‘s father [the second father and son dual entry in this class!] sharing the hybrid BMW 320. So a great day’s motorsport with some spectacular cars on and off the track. To see the full results and for more pictures see the EMC website and Facebook page.

Moffett takes Forestry Title despite late drama
Josh Moffett & Stephen Thornton are the 2018 Valvoline Motorsport Ireland National Forest Rally Championship following their victory on the Trailer Parts & Spares Lakelands Stages Rally. They took victory by the narrowest of margins on the Enniskillen based event when they had one second to spare over Desi Henry & Liam Moynihan. Moffett had been 41 seconds up coming off the last stage only for his Fiesta to develop a problem on the road section back to the finish ramp. They managed to coax the car back with 40 seconds of road penalties to win by just one second. Third place went to Vivian Hamill who had an excellent drive to third place, two seconds behind Henry. With Barry McKenna and Andrew Purcell both retiring it means Moffett is now uncatchable and becomes champion for 2018.
The 2WD category was won by David Crossen & Aileen Kelly as they put bad luck on recent events behind them to take 11th overall in their Escort. Frank Kelly & Sean Ferris pushed them hard all the way to finish just eight seconds behind in twelfth overall. Crossens championship rival Shane McGirr was a retirement with a broken half shaft in his Escort on the fifth stage. The Junior Championship is going right to the wire with Jordan Hone once again taking top points and holds a very slight advantage going into the final round once dropped points are taken into account. Marty Gallagher, Derek Mackarel and James Wilson are also in a position to take the title on the final round, the Bushwhacker Rally in Omagh in three weeks’ time. Jason Murphy & Matthew Murphy had a fine run on Jason’s prize drive in the Fiesta R2 and were listed amongst the finishers. Jason was delighted with the opportunity and loved the extra power the R2 provided compared to his usual 1 litre Peugeot 107.

A message from the legendary Ari Vatanen
“Maybe rallying can never be completely safe for the competitor but for spectators there are some simple personal safeguards which you can follow so that you are not putting yourself at risk.

Carn Quarry near Ederney saw the Campbell Contracts Rally Time Trial host over 50 rally cars in near perfect conditions on Saturday last. From 11am till late afternoon the quarry reverberated to the bellow of MkII Escorts, the screaming of Vauxhall Novas and Corsas plus the ‘bang bang’ injection and flame-spitting exhausts of a plethora of 4WD Subarus and Mitsubishi Evos. The spectators were treated to some very tight competition as the cars slid and spun their way round the twisty course laid out by Enniskillen Motor Club [EMC] which tested the drivers to the limit, especially when the rain came! Drivers had one practice run followed by 5 counting runs with their best two runs put together to count as their final time. Omagh’s Patrick O’Brien came finished first Overall and 4WD Category winner in his Class 8 Evo by just 3.77 seconds from Eoighan Rogers in his Class 2 Evo with Stephen Dickson in his similar Evo 8.97 seconds behind in third. Out of 48 finishers David Dennison won the 2WD Category in his very rapid 1,400 cc Nova coming in 8th overall in the process. In the Class battles Martin Collins claimed Class 1 in his Peugeot 106 with Ballinamallard man Derek Robinson second in his RWD Corolla. In Class 2 for Group N cars over 2,000cc Eoighan Rogers was first with Stephen Dickson second while his father Ashley came in third in their shared Evo 9. Belnaleck men Nigel Hodgins and Gary McBrien shared Nigel’s Subaru but a pipe coming off the turbo cost valuable time and they finished 5th and 6th in Class respectively. Newtownbutler driver Michael McDaid brought hos Evo home in 7th whilst Enniskillen’s Chris McCarthy took 8th. Brendan Campbell, appearing unusually for him in an Evo, finished up 9th in Class. Class 3 was won by the hard-charging David Dennison with second and third taken by Dean Humphrey [Corsa] and Damian Conlin [Nova]. Class 4 was won by Travis Humphrey [Peugeot 205] with Darren Collins [Peugeot 205] coming second and local man Raymond Elliott taking third in his Corsa. Class 5 was another class dominated by small engined front wheel drive machines; the nature of the tight, twisty and extremely slippery loose surface suiting these cars more than the high revving RWD Escorts. Ashley White [Corsa] took the honours in this Class but only just, as Trillick’s Ruairi Maguire[Corsa] was a hair’s-breadth behind by just 0.29 seconds while Fivemiletown’s Andrew McMahon came third in his Peugeot 106. Then came the ‘entertainers’ – Class 6 dominated by MkII Escorts. In first place was Hugh McQuaid steering his rapid pinto-engined Escort to a Class win just ahead of Declan Campbell in his similar car by a mere 1.58 seconds with Dara Campbell third just 1.64 seconds in arrears, again in a MkII Escort. 4th in this Class was young Caolan McKenna from Ballinamallard whilst behind him in 5th came another Campbell, this time it was Ronan, both in Escorts. In 5th place was Omagh’s Ruairi McCaffrey [Escort] and Springfield’s Rodney Donaldson secured 6th and Liam McQuaid took 7th in the Escort shared with brother Hugh. Then we were treated to no less than three BDG-engined Escorts in Class 7 plus Kinawley’s Kevin McQuaid in his beautifully prepared Vauxhall Chevette. Marc Johnston shared one of the Historic Appendix ‘K’ cars with Dad Raymond winning the Class by 4.34 seconds from the similar car of Omagh’s Ryan Barrett with Raymond Johnston taking third, Aaron Cunningham[Escort] 4th and McQuaid bringing his newly built Chevette home in one piece in 5th place. Class 8 saw the Evo 6 of Joe Hegarty claim first with Cormac McElvaney came second in his Evo7 with Clones’ Martin Tynan taking 3rd in his Evo7. . EMC would like to thank sponsors Campbell Contracts for their generous sponsorship of this event once again and acknowledge the kind permission of McCaffrey’s Quarries for the use of Carn Quarry as a venue. The event ran smoothly with no hold-ups to speak of and was thoroughly enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike.

Regulations
A message from the legendary Ari Vatanen
“Maybe rallying can never be completely safe for the competitor but for spectators there are some simple personal safeguards which you can follow so that you are not putting yourself at risk.
Ari Vatanen, 1981 World Rally Champion
Spectator Safety Watching a live motor sport event is a thrilling experience and one of the best ways for fans to get close to the action, experiencing the sport’s sights, sounds and smells first-hand.
The MSA, event organisers and venues strive to keep spectators safe but ultimately all spectators are responsible for their own personal safety.
Here are some tips that spectators should remember at live events:

Motorclub Get Scorcher for Autotest!!
The second running of the Keith Boyd Autotest was held in scorching sunshine in the Severfield yard at St Angelo on Saturday last. Enniskillen Motorclub [EMC] welcomed a new sponsor for the event in Dermot Brewster Plumbing and Heating. Despite clashing with the North West 200, the FA Cup Final and a royal wedding not to mention Fermanagh’s first round Ulster Championship match in Brewster Park a solid entry of 23 cars screeched and slid their way over the dry and dusty concrete amid the stacked steel of Severfield’s yard. This was a counting round of the McMillan Specialist Cars ANICC Northern Ireland Autotest Championship and the 2018 Clubman/Legends Challenge. Indeed the quality of the entry was reflected in the appearance of Mark King, Robin Lyons and Paul Mooney all members of the N I Team which clinched the 2017 Ken Wharton Trophy. Such was the pace at the top of the leader board that winner Steven Ferguson and second-placed Paul Mooney were never more than a handful of seconds apart all afternoon. On the third run of the first test Ferguson had an uncharacteristic error taking down a pylon to let Robin Lyons edge ahead by just 2 seconds with Mooney 2.7 seconds behind. So it went on over the next three tests with Ferguson in his 1600cc Vauxhall-engined Special just staying ahead of Lyons who was on fire in his more conventional 1430cc Mini Saloon to seal victory by a mere 3.6 seconds. Third Overall went to Paul Mooney in another Vauxhall-engined Special a further 7.2 seconds adrift. This event consisted of the four usual Autotest classes made up of Class A: Front-wheel drive sports cars and specials, Class B: rear-wheel drive sports cars and specials, Class C: Saloons under 11’ 8’’ in length [sometimes called ‘small saloons’] and Class D: Saloons of 11’ 8’’ or greater in length. Cars in these classes were competing in the NI Championship section of the event. However, in the other section aimed at bringing newcomers into the sport the Challenge there are again four classes with two sections the Clubman and the Legend as follows - Clubman A: Front-wheel drive Lightweight cars, Clubman B: Rear-wheel drive Lightweight cars, Clubman C; Front-wheel drive road going cars and Clubman D: Rear-wheel drive road going cars. Then came the Legends. Legend A: Front-wheel drive Lightweight cars, Legend B: Rear-wheel drive Lightweight cars, Legend C: Front –wheel drive road going cars and Legend D: Rear-wheel drive road going cars. Note that ‘road going cars’ are either MOT’d or are capable of passing an MOT test. They must have all standard interior trim in place but aftermarket seats and hydraulic handbrakes are permissible. The vehicles need not be taxed or insured and may be trailered to the event. All tyres must be road legal at the start of the event. This format is proving successful as EMC had 10 entries in the Clubman Challenge with just one in the Legends Challenge. Add to that an entry fee of just £20.00 and EMC may have a winning formula on their hands. In the Class battles in the NI Championship section Steven Ferguson won Class A and also claimed Overall Winner. Class B was lifted by Ashley Lamont in his super-sounding Sylva Stryker. Class C was won convincingly by Robin Lyons in his blisteringly quick Mini saloon and Mark King was the only entry in Class D, also finishing a very creditable 6th overall. Meanwhile in the Clubman Challenge Gary Campbell, in his immaculate Nova, won Class A by 6.3 seconds from Crawford Ewing. No entries were received for Class B so Class C was dominated by Richard Earney who finished some 22.4 seconds ahead of Ben Colhoun. In Class D Irvinestown’s Mark Thompson wheeled out his MX5 which he normally uses for Night Navigation and Targa Rallies for his first attempt at autotesting. He was beaten on this occasion by Dungannon’s Colin Hazelton in a similar car. In the Legends Challenge David Jenkins was the sole entrant and so subsequently he claimed the class win. At prize-giving the Clerk of the Course, Brian D’Arcy thanked all the competitors for their entries, the marshals who turned out in great numbers and his organising team for all ensuring a slick and smooth event. He also thanked the new sponsor Dermot Brewster Plumbing and Heating as well as Severfield for the use of their yard and Enniskillen Airport for the use of their premises for the prize-giving. Rally Fans Bask on Sun-drenched St Angelo
As promised the sun shone down on the rally fans on St Angelo Airfield on Bank Holiday Monday. Hundreds of rally enthusiasts turned up to watch Derek McGeehan and son Mark [on his first time as co-driver] in their Mini WRC win the Erne Skip Hire & Recycling May Day Stages Rally 2018 after staving off a hard-charging Damian Toner/Derrick Jobb in their 2.5 litre MkII Escort. Toner/Jobb were actually leading after Stage 2 by a single second but the superior traction of the 4WD Mini allowed the McGeehans to edge ahead and eventually take the win by just 11.5 seconds. Just a mere 5 seconds back came Alan Smyth/Ken Sproule in a Mitsubishi Evo X. to the delight of the hundreds of spectators these top three were never more than a handful of seconds apart all day. Finishing fourth on the day was the Evo 9 crew of Patrick O’Brien/Neil McIvor who must be rueing their slow start dropping some 8 seconds on the opening stage to McGeehan and Smyth which they could never quite make up over the 5 stages run such was the pace at the top. Some 109 rally crews started the event and 87 made it to the finish.
Moving on to the Class battles Class 1 was clinched by Martin Collins/Mikaela Woods – Honda Civic whilst Darren and Tanya McGrath from Derrylin claimed third in Class in their immaculate Honda Civic. Fourth and fifth respectively in this Class were local crews: Dermot Brewster/Brian D’Arcy – Astra GSI and James McGovern/ Dolores McGovern – Toyota Twin Cam RWD. Neil McGahey/Alan Crawford came 6th in this Class after a long lay-off. Popular winner of Class 2 was the stalwart Enniskillen crew of Mark Farmer/Mark Britton in Gerry’s Evo 6 who also came in a very creditable 47th Overall. The Lisbellaw duo of William Graham partnered by first-timer Darragh Sheridan in their agile little Corsa claimed 3rd in Class 3 which was won by Dean Humphrey/Nigel Brennan also in a Corsa. Class 4 winners were Travis Humphrey/Brian Little in a Peugeot 205 GTI with Raymond Elliott and Ben Thompson from Kesh taking second in a Vauxhall Corsa. Young Ben was also a first-time Co-driver on the day. Kinawley crew of Barry Murphy/Kevin McQuaid were 5th in this Class in their Talbot Sunbeam. Class 5 was won convincingly by Kyle White/Sean Topping – Peugeot 208 R2 with Derek Robinson/David Forde 13th in this large class in their ‘left hooker’ Corolla Twin Cam. In Class 6 brothers Hugh and Liam McQuaid finished 3rd in class by a mere 0.1 seconds! Paul McShea/Carrie McShea appeared in a MkII Escort instead of their more usual RWD Honda V6 engined Ford Orion and collected 7th in this hotly contested class. Next Class was 7 and here Brendan Campbell/Conall Mullin took their clean revving MkII Escort to 3rd position with brother Damian and Sean Wray next up only 4.4 seconds behind in their MkII Escort whilst the class winner here was Robert Erwin/Ciaran Carey in a most unusual 2 litre Honda Civic engined MR2: a very rapid machine indeed! Damien Tourish/Rodney Stewart were the winners of Class 8 in another MkII Escort while just 5.8 seconds behind was Brendan McDaid navigated by Enniskillen man Brian Hoy again in a MkII Escort. EMC wish Brian very good luck as he prepares to co-drive for Callum Devine in the WRC on the upcoming Rally Portugal in a Vauxhall Adam R2. Class 9 was the class for WRC, FIA Super 2000, R5, R4, R4T and R2 cars and was won by Patrick O’Brien/Neil McIvor in their Evo 9 as the top three Overall were not then eligible for the class awards.
Clerk of the Course, Ron Neely and his EMC team followed the successful formula of the past two years and the fast flowing but challenging stages were once again hailed as a great success by competitor and spectator alike. At the prize-giving Neely gave credit to Declan Magee of Erne Skip Hire & Recycling for once again sponsoring the May Day Stages Rally. He went on to thank Alan Cathcart who provided access to the airport for the rally, the marshals and other officials who acted professionally on the day to help make the event the success it was. He paid tribute to the patience and cooperation of the huge crowd of spectators who turned out to enjoy the spectacle in, for once, brilliant sunshine. Erne Skip Hire & Recycling
May Day Stages Rally 2018
Enniskillen Motor Club Promises Spectacular Rally Action
St Angelo Airfield on Monday 7th May will see over 100 spectacular rally cars battle it out on the smooth tarmac of our local airport. The Erne Skip Hire & Recycling May Day Stages Rally is the event where all the rally fans and ‘petrol heads’ will surely gather to see such cracking modern machinery as Derek McGeehan’s Mini WRC, Marty McKenna’s Ford Fiesta WRC, Gareth Sayers - Subaru Impreza WRC, Frank Wray also in a Subaru S11 WRC plus the Mitsubishis of Patrick O’Brien, Declan McCrory, Darren McKelvey and Cathan McCourt. You could pick a possible winner from any of these but then the indecently quick 2.5 litre MkII Escort of Brookeborough’s Chris Armstrong or the glorious sounding BDG-engined MkII of Ronan Campbell and previous 2WD winner – Damian Toner also in a 2.5 litre Escort are sure to entertain the crowds and on what the weather forecasters are saying will be a day of sunshine with temperatures soaring to over 15C on the Bank Holiday, will be waiting in the wings-if any of the 4WD ‘supercars’ hit a glitch-to snatch victory over the 6 Special Tarmac Stages. Other local ‘entertainers on the day will be Rodney Donaldson in another MkII Escort, Damian and Brendan Campbell as well as Dara Campbell all in RWD Escorts along with the Dickson brothers – Ian and Jason-in their Fiesta R2s. Florencecourt pilot, Colm McGuinness, will wheel out his long awaited newly built beautiful MkII Escort with a brand new Kevin Gallagher 2 litre engine. Roslea’s Niall Connolly and Fergal Shevlin are sure to figure in class 7 in their Talbot Sunbeam. Other crews making it a ‘family day out’ are James and Dolores McGovern in James’s newly rebuilt RWD Toyota Corolla, Declan and Kaolan McGarrity – Vauxhall Nova and Paul and Carrie McShea in a MkII Escort this year instead of their more usual V6 RWD Orion whilst Dominic Leonard has dad Frankie in the ‘hot seat’ of his Civic. But the 2WD crews will have their work cut out this year as Hillclimb and Sprint specialist, Seamus Morris is bound to be in ‘with a shout’ of overall victory in his very rapid 270 bhp Darrian GTR. Seamus has tasted victory on the Airfield before winning the Erne Trophy Sprint, albeit in his single-seater. In Class 1 Dermot Brewster and Brian D’Arcy once more appear in their Vauxhall Astra GSI whilst Neil McGahey will be trying hard in the same class in his MkV fwd RS 2000. Some local crews you will have seen ‘out after dark’ on EMC’s recent night navigation Erne Safari Rally are William Graham with Darragh Sheridan on the notes in their Corsa and Mervyn Wilson in his high-revving 1600 MkII Escort with Mini fan Steven Taylor co-driving on his first stage rally! There is also the Junior Class which has drivers who are aged 14-17 and are accompanied by an experienced co-driver aged over 21 who is not a family member in a very basic 1000cc rally car. These cars have a large ‘J’ on their doors. Catering for the ‘older’ spectator is the 1600 Talbot Sunbeam of Barry Murphy/Kevin McQuaid plus the 1500 [pre-crossflow] Ford Anglia 105E of Olivia Coulter/Jonathan Chambers. Perhaps a dark horse on the day could be Gary Cairns in his Subaru Impreza Gp A 555, a veteran of the May Day Rally. Clerk of the Course Ron Neely and his team have laid on an exciting but safe rally with Service once again up the middle of the main runway and toilets and plenty of hot food available from Kitty’s Kitchen. So with free car parking and U 16s free as well plus plenty of disabled capacity combined with the promised sunshine it all adds up to a terrific day out for rally fans. Spectators are asked to obey the Rally Marshals and enjoy their day out. Up-to-date entries and results may be viewed on www.rallyscore.net and further details are available on www.enniskillenmotorclub.co.uk or on the Club Facebook page.

Grainger/Howard Stay Consistent to Claim Another Safari Win
Local driver Benny Grainger partnered by David Howard in their classic Austin Mini Cooper claimed victory on the Elite Tyres and Repairs Erne Safari Rally last Friday night. It wasn’t until the second half of the rally that the Cooper mounted duo established dominance dropping only 7 minutes into Secret Check 15.5 whilst nearest rivals John and Jonathan Henderson in their Nissan Micra lost a maximum 30 and effectively the rally eventually finishing 19 minutes down in second overall. As no entries were received for Class 2 this meant that next on the results sheet were Class 3 crew of Tony Kelly and Aaron Johnston in their Audi A6 Estate claiming a class win by some 41 minutes! Class 4 winners were Bryan Og Gallagher and Peter Jennings in a Peugeot 406 with Jennings unusually in the ‘hot seat’ for once. They just pipped the father and son crew of Gary and Darragh Sheridan, in their immaculate Vauxhall Nova Sport, by one minute. A commendable third in Class 4 was the father and son crew of Mark and Kyle Thompson in a Mazda MX5 a further 5 minutes in arrears.
A bumper entry of 29 ended up with 26 starters on the night and what a super night for navigation rallying with clear starlight skies, dry, twisty and bumpy roads plus a selection of period rally cars which had fans jostling to use their phones taking pictures at Elite Tyres’ premises during pre-event scrutiny. Apart from Grainger’s Austin Mini Cooper, Neil Fletcher appeared in his Mk 1 Ford Escort Mexico, whilst the Sheridans were in a Vauxhall Nova Sport. Mark and son Kyle Thompson wheeled out their Mazda MX5 which they also use in Targa Rallies and were joined in similar cars by Geoff Lamont/Colin Irvine and Harold McClelland and Neil Rodgers. Enniskillen man Oliver Treacy was partnered by Barry Murphy in their immaculate Subaru Impreza estate on their first ever navigation rally but unfortunately they were not classed as finishers on the night. The Class 1 crews enjoyed a 65 mile route to the north and east of Irvinestown whilst Classes 3 and 4 competed over a 45 mile route which finished after Time Control G. Other local crews competing on the night were Drew Chambers/Ian Beavis – Peugeot 206GT 4th in Class4, Mark McCaffrey/Conal Mullin – Peugeot 405 5th in Class4, Neil Harron/Brian Hoy – Toyota Corolla 6th in Class 4 and Mervyn Wilson and Scott Thompson – Mazda 323 7th in Class 4. Other locals included Matthew Cathcart/Connor Woods – Ford Focus RS Cosworth, Raymond Elliott/Gareth Barton – Suzuki Swift, and William Graham Snr/William Graham Jnr – Honda Civic.
At the finish in Mahon’s Hotel in Irvinestown the crews enjoyed a hot supper before Drew Wilson, Clerk of the Course, was joined by Event Secretary, Wendy Blackledge, to declare the results and hand out the prizes. Further details and photographs may be seen on the Enniskillen Motor Club’s website and Facebook page. The next navigation rally will be at Cookstown on Friday 30th March: see www.rallyscore.net for details and entry.

2018 Valvoline Motorsport Ireland National Forest Rally Championship Round 1 Preview
2018 Valvoline Motorsport Ireland National Forest Rally Championship Round 1 Preview
The 2018 Valvoline Motorsport Ireland National Forest Rally Championship gets under way this Saturday 3rd February with the first major Irish rally of the year, the Carrick on Suir based William Loughman Memorial Forest Rally. The traditional series opener is running a couple of weeks early this year but that has not detracted from the quality and quantity of entries with almost 80 crews set to line up at the start ramp this weekend. Rallying in Ireland may seem to be under pressure at the moment but Carrick on Suir Motor Club can feel justifiably proud of their work in attracting so many crews to the south-east.
Josh Moffett who won the William Loughman event last year is back with Stephen Thornton co-driving in a Ford Fiesta R5, and Josh will be looking to emulate his brother Sam who of course is the reigning Irish forestry champion. He will face some tough opposition as Andrew Purcell & Mark Wiley are also contenders for the top spot on the podium now that Purcell has acquired an R5 Fiesta, while four times BRC champion Keith Cronin is also believed to be contemplating an entry. Others looking to compete include USA based Monaghan man Barry McKenna, regular series competitor UK based Mick O’Brien and Ray Breen, father of Citroen works driver Craig, on his local event. Gerard Lucey from Cork, who finished third overall in last year’s championship in his Class 20 Mitsubishi Lancer returns to Carrick while Niall McCullagh and Liam Regan in their Group N versions should also be among those to challenge strongly. Stephen McCann is bringing his Ford Fiesta S2000 while Cathan McCourt makes the switch from a Lancer to a Citroen DS3 R5.
The 2WD battle will be, as always, one to watch. Last year’s championship runner up David Crossen put in some incredible performances throughout the year in his Escort and will be one of the favourites to continue that form. However the list of drivers willing to dethrone him is impressive, with Shane McGirr (Starlet), Michael Conlon, Vivian Hamill, Adrian Hetherington, Tommy O’Connell, John Gordon and Damien Hagan (all in Escorts) ready to do battle. Whoever comes out on top in the 2WD section will certainly have earned it the hard way.
The junior category also looks very exciting with Derek Mackarel and Johnnie Mulholland from last year’s junior championship being joined in Carrick by Marty Gallagher, John O’Sullivan and last year’s forestry Group N champion Jordan Hone. These are only a few of a dozen entries in Class 16, and the competition is sure to be fierce from the start. The M. O’Brien Plant Hire Junior 1000 series for 15-19 year olds is in its second season and last year’s champion Jason Murphy will be coming to Carrick to begin the defence of his title in his Peugeot 107. Aoife Gahan will also be gearing up for her first full championship season in a Chevrolet Spark while Peter Beaton from Scotland is entered in a Peugeot 107. The championship offers an attractive first overall prize of €1500 along with various other incentives and awards on each of the rounds.
The nine stage event begins at 11am this coming Saturday (3rd February) and will see the first six stages done in daylight, with the real sting in the tail being the final three tests completed in darkness. The first car is due back at the finish at approximately 8pm.

The new Chairman of Enniskillen Motor Club 2018, Ms Wendy Blackledge
The new chairman of Enniskillen Motor Club, Wendy Blackledge, is certainly no newcomer to motorsport. The popular veteran co-driver and navigator has been involved in rallying since the 1970s sitting in the hot seat with drivers as diverse as sister Linda on Night Navigation Rallies in a road car the 70s and 80s to sitting with Drew Chambers in his immaculately turned out Talbot Samba in the forests plus several forays onto the international scene and most recently, winning Class 3 in the Sligo Pallets Border Championship stage rallies with Roger Kennedy in a Peugeot 306 GTi and now she takes the helm to steer Enniskillen Motor Club through 2018. Wendy is also a seasoned administrator and has been secretary on almost all of EMC events as well as clerk of the course of the May Day Stages Rally. Blackledge brings her own brand of humour and vast experience to the post and with her steady hand at the helm 2018 should run just as smoothly. She thanked outgoing chairman Eamonn McGarrity and the rest of the 2017 committee for their enthusiasm and efforts. Assisting Wendy will be Alan Cullinan as vice-chairman. Brian D’Arcy was re-elected as club secretary with Lorraine Simpson once again the club treasurer. Veteran clubman, Drew Wilson is once more club president with Ron Neely as vice-president.
Ms Jackie Elliott, ANICC Clubman of the Year for 2017
Enniskillen Motor Club are very pleased to announce that Ms Jackie Elliott has been awarded Association of Northern Ireland Car Clubs [ANICC] Clubman of the Year for 2017 whilst Wyn Heap has received Motorsport Marshalling Partnership [MMP] Marshal of the Year for 2017.

Sam Seals It on Bushwhacker Rally!
2017 Valvoline Motorsport Ireland National Forest Rally Championship-Round Six
Sixth place was enough on Saturday’s Bushwhacker Rally to give Sam Moffett and Stephen Thornton in their Ford Fiesta WRC the coveted 2017 Valvoline Motorsport Ireland National Forest Rally Championship title, for both driver and co- driver. In a measured drive, the Monaghan driver lifted the Doc Jackson Memorial Trophy and took his second major title of the season, with a possibility of wrapping up a third next weekend in Cork. “The stages were great today, but we had to stay sensible and get home to the finish with a few points, so we had to stay out of the race on this rally. To clinch the championship is brilliant, and it’s been a great year, a great series, and for Stephen to get the co- drivers title is an extra bonus” said Sam. With Ger Lucey non-starting, second in the series went to two-wheel drive champion David Crossen with Lucey third after another strong season in his Evo 8.
Winner over the six stages laid on by the Omagh Motor Club was last year’s champion Desi Henry in his Skoda Fabia R5, twenty-seven seconds ahead of Jonny Greer’s R5 Citroen, who in turn was four seconds ahead of impressive Scottish visitor Jock Armstrong in his Subaru. Local driver Paul Barrett was a fine fourth in a hired Evo 9, ahead of Derek McGarrity’s R5 Skoda. Sam Moffett took sixth ahead of Alan Carmichael’s Mini WRC, with Alan Smyth’s Evo eighth and a relieved Adrian Hetherington ninth in the right-hand drive R5 Fiesta. “It’s the first proper day I have got to learn this car, and it is very different to anything else, even under braking and the way you apply the hand-brake for the tight chicanes. A day of learning is what it’s been” commented Adrian who claimed seventh in the championship. Retirements included the Mitsubishi of Mark Donnelly on stage two and Martin Cairns who put the Fiesta WRC off the road on stage one.
A fine tenth place overall for Niall McCullagh and first in Group N leader was still not enough to give him the Group N title. That honour went to Jordan Hone with father Paul in the co-drivers seat. It wasn’t clear-cut as Jordan’s Evo 9 was struck with gear selector trouble on stage one. “It wasn’t looking too good at one point, but thanks to Niall Henry and the McCourt’s assistance we made it into service.” Indeed Jordan’s eventual fourth place in Group N was enough to secure the 2017 title. Second on Saturday was Belfast’s Liam Regan who is getting used to his new Evo 9, and Cathan McCourt ended up third despite a stage two spin and the car cutting out on a stage, whilst brother Conor had intercom trouble in his similar machine. Ashley Dickson got caught out with a chicane on stage two but recovered to finish the event even with a big scare on the final stage.
In the Valvoline two-wheel race, David Crossen powered his 2 litre MK2 Escort into eighth overall after two stages, and led Frank Kelly’s bigger engine MK2 by seven seconds, but Frank’s rally was over at the end of stage four with mechanical maladies, and David eased off to claim sixteenth place and first two-wheel drive. “We had a good start on stage one, and on stage two, although we had a moment when the car leapt out of a rut, so it was time to go a little easier. It’s been a brilliant championship, and brilliant to get six 2 wheel drive wins from six starts, so a big thanks to everyone who helped for that “ said the Comber engineer. Vivian Hamill went off the road, and Donall Sweeney retired on stage five, so the second place went to Oran Donnelly who was enjoying being back in the forests with his Escort. Third was former champion Mickey Conlon despite over-heating issues with the MK2 all day. Fourth was the BMW of Damien McGuaran just six seconds ahead of Owen McMackin’s MK2, who was just ahead of class five winner Hugh McQuaid’s eight valve MK2.
The Valvoline Junior Section was as ever closely fought and winner on the day was Derek Mackeral in the Vauxhall Nova, continuing his good form from the Lakeland Rally. The class 16 championship was to be decided however and Omagh’s Stephen Dickson emerged as the champion for the second season in the R2 Fiesta after a third-place finish behind the hard trying Johnnie Mulholland. Mallow’s Jonny O’Sullivan had the disappointment of retiring his Fiesta after service with mechanical woes, but then the elation at the finish of clinching second in the Junior championship, and more importantly first Motorsport Ireland licensed driver which nets him an automatic Billy Coleman Award nomination.
Again we would like to give special thanks to all our championship sponsors for their help this season– Valvoline, Andrew Fanning Motor Factors, M. O'Brien Plant Hire, Suirway Group Forklifts & Farm Machinery, Jelf Motorsport Insurance, Exact Signs & Graphics, Pottinger Machinery, Ears Motorsport / Kumho Tyres, Colton Pump & Heating Services, Coillte, Concept Fire Services Ltd, Gordon Automotive Services, Barron Pix & SVS Incar Cameras.
It’s been quite a season in 2017 for the Valvoline Motorsport Ireland National Forest Rally Championship, and the Bushwhacker event with its 109 starters provided a fitting finale to an action-packed forestry year. With plans already in place for 2018, the championship looks to be continually growing, as the next big event is the annual prizegiving on 25th November at the Bridge House - Tullamore.

N.I Rally Title Battle Hots Up After Lakeland Stages Rally!
Round Five of the 2017 MSA ANICC McGrady Insurance Northern Ireland Rally Championship!
Victory on the Lakeland Stages Rally for Monaghan driver Josh Moffett in his R5 Fiesta was a significant success, but more significant for the 2017 MSA ANICC McGrady Insurance Northern Ireland Rally Championship battle was Jonny Greer’s second place finish in his Citroen DS3 R5, just over half a minute behind. The Enniskillen Motor Club event ran over classic forestry stages including Lough Navar, Big Dog and Ballintempo and in near perfect conditions a record entry of over one hundred cars tackled the six special stages, with sixty-eight crews making the finish.
From the start it was Josh Moffett in front of his brother Sam in a sister R5 Fiesta, with Jonny Greer close behind, but significantly moving ahead of Sam on the long third test. Championship leader Derek McGarrity was having his first run in an R5 Skoda Fabia and impressively slotted into fourth place, a position he would finish in, as once again the Mossley driver illustrated his uncanny ability of stepping into a strange rally car and going very quickly. Destined to finish seventeen seconds behind him was Banbridge ace Kenny McKinstry in his Impreza WRC, the rally veteran having been tied on time with Derek after three stages, but dropped back off the pace in the afternoon loop.Strabane’s Martin Cairns brought his WRC Fiesta into sixth, just one second ahead of Derek McGeehan in the Mini WRC, who in turn was just one second in front of David Condell in ninth in his first drive in a Ford Focus WRC. Another driver in a new vehicle was Omagh’s Alan Smyth in a Mitsubishi Evo X, and he completed the top ten.
The Group N battle was won by Claudy’s Jordan Hone in his Evo 9, finishing eleventh overall. Niall McCullagh was second with Belfast’s Liam Regan in a new Evo 9 taking third in Group N on a tie-break on time from Dromore’s Cathan McCourt.
In the two wheel drive battle Comber’s David Crossen in his MK2 Escort was first home in a fabulous ninth overall, with Donal Sweeney’s MK2 next up in eighteenth place, and third was Historic winner, local driver Raymond Johnston whose RS1800 BDA Escort provided a glorious sound-track through the Fermanagh forests.
Other class winners were: Ian Dickson- class 1 (Ford Fiesta), Ruari Maguire- class 3 (Vauxhall Corsa), Gary Kiernan- class 4 (MK2 Escort), Chris Simms-class 5 (MK2 Escort), Niall Henry- class 8 (Evo 10).
In just three weeks the Omagh Motor Club hosts the famous Bushwhacker Rally, and this event could decide the destiny of the 2017 title. For seven times champion Derek McGarrity it could unlock title number eight. However Jonny Greer is hungry for his first title, and with the original final round in the Down Forests cancelled and a decision awaited to see whether Magherafelt Motor Club run their reserve rally on 4th November. It’s a decision that’s important for the Carryduff driver as points scoring opportunities are rapidly running out.

Press Release issued by Andrew Bushe Promotions- F-Andrew Bushe Promotions t-@andrew_bushe
Enniskillen Motor Club [EMC] are delighted to announce the continuing sponsorship from rally diehard Hugh McQuaid for their upcoming annual forest rally. Saturday 2nd September sees the forests of Fermanagh host the, ‘Trailer Parts and Spares Lakeland Stages Rally 2017 – supported by TuffMac Trailers’. Entries are now open for this popular and exciting event which is a counting round of both the McGrady Insurance MSA ANICC Northern Ireland Stage Rally Championship and the Valvoline Irish National Forestry Rally Championship. Once again the rally will be broadcast by ‘On The Limits’ TV programme. The same EMC organising team of recent years are once more following their very successful format of using the Service Park on the Coleshill Road on the outskirts of Enniskillen town with just a short distance to the famous Fermanagh forests such as Lough Navar, Big Dog and the long, challenging and furiously fast Ballintempo complex. Thus rally fans and competitors are sure to be in for a super day of rally action come September 2nd.
Josh Moffett made up for the disappointment of coming second on last year’s Lakeland Stages Rally by taking an emphatic win this year. Co-driven by Stephen Thornton, Josh in a Ford Fiesta R5 showed his gravel prowess by opening a 27sec lead over the opening loop of three stages, by the end of the six stages the Monaghan pair had been fastest on all six stages and had extended their lead to 31secs. In second overall were Jonny Greer and Kirsty Riddick in their Citroen DS3 R5, they gained maximum points in the McGrady Insurance Northern Ireland Championship. Taking third overall were the winners for the past two years Sam Moffett and James Fulton. Sam also on a Fiesta R5 took second place points in the Vavoline Irish Forestry Championship behind his brother Josh. This point’s haul has given Sam an excellent chance of collecting the title on the Omagh based Bushwacker Rally in three weeks time; it is the final round of the Championship.
The Moffett brothers are Monaghan men but they completed their education in Portora Royal School so the Lakeland Rally is almost regards as the brother’s local event, they have dominated the results over the last few years. Other Fermanagh based crews were not so fortunate; Jon Armstrong and Shane McGirr had to withdraw before the event as they both had mechanical issues to contend with. Connor Woods and Chris Corry were top local finishers in their Mitsubishi Evo 9, Father and son duo Raymond & Mark Johnston took victory in the historic class as well as finishing in the top 30.
Gerry Cavanagh Clerk of the Course for this year’s Trailer Parts and Spares.com Lakeland Stages Rally paid tribute to everyone who has helped out at the Rally, “The officials, marshals and crews here today have all contributed to one of the best forestry rallies Ireland has seen in a few years” Gerry went on to say “The feedback from crews has been excellent, everyone said the stages were a real challenge and are the best we have raced on this year”. Gerry also would like to thank the Forestry Commission for all their help and assistance, without it this event would not have been possible. Planning for next year’s Rally will start as soon as the dust has settled on this year’s event.

A message from the legendary Ari Vatanen
“Maybe rallying can never be completely safe for the competitor but for spectators there are some simple personal safeguards which you can follow so that you are not putting yourself at risk.
Ari Vatanen, 1981 World Rally Champion

Montgomery Motorsport Erne Trophy Sprint 2017
EMC are pleased to announce that Montgomery Motorsport will once again sponsor their round of the NI Sprint Championship to be held on the super smooth tarmac of St Angelo Airport near Enniskillen on Sat 1st July. This event will have double points on offer for championship contenders. Event regs and entry form details are available via EMC website
This exciting event takes place on the super-smooth tarmac of St Angelo Airfield, Enniskillen. EMC will continue to use the same track lay-out as in the past two years giving drivers two practice runs and three timed runs around the runways of the scenic airfield used as a motorsport venue by the club since 1969.

Sprint is Back with Montgomery Motorsport as Title Sponsor
Enniskillen Motor Club [EMC] will once again run their Sprint on St Angelo Airfield with Montgomery Motorsport as the title sponsor for 2017. The event will now be known for 2017 as the Montgomery Motorsport Erne Trophy Sprint. Event Clerk of the Course, Declan Gannon, said that EMC are delighted to receive the support of Montgomery Motorsport for this very exciting and popular motorsport event. Gannon also revealed that EMC had to date received over 70 entries with more expected and was looking forward to Saturday 1st July and 10.00am when the first car will blast off in practice with the first official timed run starting at 1pm. In all competitors will have 2 practice runs and then 3 timed runs over the 2 mile course, if all goes according to plan on the day. Tremendous local interest has meant that the bulk of the entries are expected to be Fermanagh drivers with such entertainers as Rodney Donaldson in a Subaru Impreza, Raymond and Marc Johnston sharing their glorious sounding BDG-engined MkII Escort, Veteran Mervyn Johnston in an unusual Austin Midas with son Karl in a Mini Cooper. Enniskillen man Jonni McDaid will share his immaculate Peugeot 106 Cup car with Dad Tommi and Damian McGauran will let Dad Thomas, a veteran of the very first Lakeland Stages Rally in 1969, share driving duties in his unusual forest racer – a Honda-engined 320 BMW. In this type of event the driver is the sole occupant of the car and thus we can have a ‘dual entry’ of the same vehicle. Another veteran, Brian D’Arcy, who drives competitively for the first time will share a Vauxhall Astra GSI with neighbour Dermot Brewster. After a great showing on their debut rally on May Day with Dermot driving all eyes will be on the clock to see who has bragging rights come Saturday night! Ballinamallard man Davy Forde will pilot his immaculate 1400 ex works Ford Puma and Neil McGahey will once again turn out in his FWD RS 2000. Eldoras Elgerius will appear in his 1800cc Ford Focus and Francie Morris is driving his newly-built BDG-engined Mk II Escort. The most eagerly awaited Escort for Ford fans will be that of Gerard O’Connell who has just rebuilt his Mk II Escort with a mighty turbo engine with 2,500cc, plenty of flames, tyre smoke and a reputed 500 + bhp driving the rear wheels! The sprint format of this exhilarating event means spectators will see single seaters and special saloons which they normally won’t see except on television or at dedicated race tracks such as Kirkistown or Mondello – both over 100 miles away. Therefore other spectacular vehicles entered are the exciting lightweight Maguire Mini of Ian Howard, the super quick Darrian T90GTRs of both veteran Rally driver Dessie McCartney [no stranger to St Angelo] and overall winner in 2014/5 Seamus Morris. Seamus leaving his Pilbeam at home this year means that dark horse Adrian Pollock from Omagh in his rapid single seater: Dallara F3 could be Overall Winner in 2017. Adrian has lots of experience and success in single seaters and will be the man to beat. John Donnelly from Beragh in his pinto-engined Reynard SF80 will challenge for overall honours but the long straights of the airfield may leave his 2 litre car a little under powered. Robert and John Morgan sharing their 2.7 litre Pilbeam will also be in the running come the finish; the Antrim duo no strangers to success in open wheeled competition. So with parking and disabled parking plus U-16s free there is no excuse for not spectating on St Angelo Airfield this Saturday. For further details on updated entries and regulations see the website www.enniskillenmotorclub.co.uk or facebook page.
Keith Boyd Autotest
Kindly sponsored by Lakeland Tours
Inaugural Keith Boyd Autotest a Great Success!!
Saturday 20th May saw Enniskillen Motor Club [EMC] run the first Keith Boyd Autotest sponsored by Lakeland Tours. On the day a tremendous field of 17 Championship runners took to the concrete yard at St Angelo kindly granted by owners Severfield [previously Fisher’s] with an additional 10 Clubman competitors in the new Clubman Class. From midday the brooding steel girders on the edges of the yard were witness to terrific tyre-screeching action as competitors hurled their Mini-Specials, Sports cars, Minis, Novas, Micra, Saxo and MX5 plus various spectacular kit car derivatives such as Stryker and Westfield in their efforts to beat the clock. After the three tests were run four times the overall winner was championship leader Paul Mooney who seems unbeatable in his extremely rapid and reliable Vauxhall-powered Mini Special. His winning margin over previous champion Steven Ferguson in his BMC-engined Mini Special was some 21.4 seconds with Paul Blair a mere 0.1 seconds behind in third in his Stryker.
In the Class battles Class 1 [Mini-Specials- FWD] was of course claimed by Paul Mooney with Steven Ferguson second and Peter Grimes third. Class 2 [Sports Cars-RWD] victor was Paul Blair with Ashley Lamont second in his glorious-sounding Westfield and Tom Devaney third in his immaculate Stryker. Class 3 [Minis –Small Saloons FWD] was won by Robin Lyons despite a scare on Run 8 when he broke a CV joint on his Mini. Second in Class 2 was local man Jonni McDaid in his immaculate Mini with Norman Ferguson taking third place. Mark King took his Nova to first in Class 4[Large Saloons] with second going to Andrew Blair, the youngster some 72.2 seconds back but 13.9 seconds ahead of George McMillan in a similar machine. In the new Clubman Class which is new for 2017 and set up to encourage newcomers into the sport some 10 challengers braved the changeable conditions which ranged from deluges of rain which made it difficult to see the exact parameters of some tests to dry and dusty which brought different problems later in the day. The Clubman Class competed over the same areas as the ‘experts’ but with more open test set-ups. The competition was no less fierce and Jack Gillis took the honours by a margin of 13.1 seconds from Gary Campbell with Brendan Mooney third a further 41.8 seconds in arrears - all in Novas. This Class was especially favoured by the late Keith Boyd and it was very poignant to see such a large entry in the first running of the class in Enniskillen in 2017.
At the finish in the Airport Café Brian D’Arcy thanked all the competitors for a very enjoyable and competitive day’s motorsport in somewhat trying conditions. . He then welcomed Midge Newman, partner of the late Keith Boyd, to assist with presentation of the trophies. After this procedure D’Arcy thanked Severfield for the use of their yard and the Airport Café for the use of their premises and excellent service. He had a particular mention for his Autotest organising team, all the marshals and a special thanks to Ian McCutcheon of Lakeland Tours for their continued and valuable support.

Motor Club to name Autotest in honour of Keith Boyd
Enniskillen Motor Club [EMC] is to honour the memory of their immediate past-President Keith Boyd. Boyd, who passed away in August 2016, was the Club’s President but had at some time held every position available on the EMC Committee. He enjoyed all aspects of motorsport but Autotesting had a special place in his heart. Therefore this year on Saturday 20th May the Club’s Autotest round of the NI Championship sponsored by Sam Bowden Garage Services of Stewartstown will be named:
‘The Keith Boyd Autotest sponsored by Lakeland Tours’
The overall award of a new magnificent trophy inscribed with Keith’s name will go to the winner with the Fastest Time of The Day. This prestigious event usually attracts the top drivers in the Championship and will include competitors from all over this island such as; NI championship leader Paul Mooney, Robin Lyons, British Champion Steven Ferguson, Paul Phelan, Eamonn Byrne and many others. Local interest will centre on Enniskillen’s Jonni McDaid in his immaculate Mini which he shares with veteran Dad, Tommi. A new Clubman Class has been set up this year to encourage newcomers to the sport and had some 15 entrants in Dungannon’s recent event. It comprises a saloon section and sports car section and is held over a more open test than that used for the experts.
Fisher’s Yard at St Angelo on Saturday 20th May from midday will be the place to be to witness some terrific car control and tyre-burning car gymnastics. With the Airport Café open all day as Finish Venue Autotest fans are certainly in for a treat.

A tribute to Mr AUSTIN FRAZER
Two 'legends' together: Austin Frazer & Cahal 'CB' Curley
On November 30th 2016, Austin Frazer, President and Director, informed the Enniskillen Motor Club Committee that he had decided to retire from all positions within the Club. He said it was not a decision he had taken lightly but he felt the time had come to hand over the mantle to a younger person. His announcement was greeted by the members with two differing emotions. The first was the sense of loss of the father figure of the Club, a sporting icon and an inspirational figure in motorsport circles way beyond County Fermanagh. As the late Keith Boyd once remarked “Austin has small feet but huge shoes to fill”. The second emotion was a combined one of thanks and respect, thanks for having the foresight to found and oversee the Club from its first day and respect for the difficult decision he had taken. After 53 years of dedicated service to Enniskillen Motor Club, Austin Frazer had decided to hang up his helmet and sign off on his last rally timecard.
Austin served Enniskillen Motor Club Limited as Honorary Secretary for 9 years, Vice-President for 10 years and was President for an amazing 33 years. He was also a Director of the Club upon its registration with the Companies Office back in 1976. Outside of his Office Bearer functions, Austin was very actively involved in the organisation and execution of events run by the Club. The records of EMC organised events show that he went from being Clerk of the Course for a kart race meeting held in 1966 to Event Director of the massively successful Summit Rally of 2000. Until recent years, all events organised by EMC would have had the Frazer trademarks of planning and attention to detail coupled with the minimum of fuss. He had the ability to bring out the best of the organising committees charged with overseeing events while ensuring that competitors, sponsors and spectators enjoyed their participation. All this involvement was set against a background of competing as a top class navigator at the highest level of motorsport right across Ireland, Great Britain and beyond. And he had a day job as well!
Within EMC, another admirable quality that Austin possesses is his great humility. Despite his achievements in the higher echelons of motor sport both as a competitor and an administrator, Austin was always willing to undertake the more mundane but equally important roles such as marshalling or car park duties at EMC events, as required. There are others who have achieved far less in the sport than Austin who would not countenance such assistance to a club as it might be deemed to be beneath their self perceived status. Therein is a lesson for us all.
It is only when you look back at outcomes and achievements associated with Austin that you realise he was a motorsport visionary. He saw the need for a well organised motor club in the County Fermanagh area and, thankfully, with some like minded individuals he founded Enniskillen Motor Club in January 1964. When asked to assist in Donegal in the 1970s, he foresaw the possibilities of international participation if the local businesses and authorities got behind the rally and Fermanagh’s loss became Donegal’s gain. After the near tragic event in the 1986 Galway Rally, Austin and his driver, the late great Bertie Fisher, could see the need for the introduction of improved spectator safety plans and implementation and both took a year out of competition to get the message across in a very practical way throughout the island of Ireland. It was the embryo of the Rally Future Programme, over thirty years before the MSA got to grips with the problem. It was on Austin’s watch that EMC became a Company Limited by Guarantee with Directors to oversee the running of the Club thus limiting the liability of the members. With this ability to look into the future with such obvious clarity, it makes you wonder if he ever had a flutter on the Grand National!
Austin Frazer’s name is synonymous with the biggest rally in Ireland – the Donegal International - and he is a demi-God to the dedicated petrolheads in that part of the country. He was the brainchild behind the 1970 Rally of the Rosses which in turn became the Donegal International in 1972 and was Clerk of the Course for the initial 3 years. It is hard to comprehend the enormity of the challenge that faced Austin in undertaking such a formidable task so far from home while holding down a very responsible day job. But with his charisma and expertise, Austin and his team exceeded all expectations and the rally attracted huge entries, including the international stars of the day, had a very sizeable prize fund and introduced enthusiasts to some of the greatest rally stages ever seen. It was also in Donegal that Austin got permission for competitors to use pacenotes on a rally, the first time they were ever used in Ireland. In recognition of his efforts on the Donegal, Austin became the first rally organiser to be awarded the Ford Rallyman of the Month in 1975, an award that had previously only ever been given to a competitor.
Austin recalls his first event being the 1959 Dungannon Night Navigation Rally with Ian Turkington in Ian’s Morris Minor 1000 where he discovered he was one of three navigators in the car. It was not an auspicious start to what became a glittering career. Over the following years, Austin sat in with many well known drivers such as Roy Cathcart, Mervyn Johnston, Billy Coleman, Ashley Armstrong, Sean Campbell, Per-Inge Walfridsson and even Nigel Rockey but it is with Cathal Curley and Bertie Fisher that Austin is most identified. He competed for 12 seasons with each and enjoyed the experiences equally despite the drivers having totally different temperaments. Austin’s calm demeanour and forensic preparation were the ideal foil for the two totally committed drivers and they were the first to admit that their successes were entirely down to teamwork.
Austin’s first international rally win came in the Galway Rally of 1971 with Cathal in the Ford Escort Twin Cam and his last was with his old pal Mervyn Johnston in the Mini Cooper S in the 1993 Galway Historics Rally. In between, he won the 1974 Circuit of Ireland and Manx International Rallies with Cathal in a Porsche 911 Carrera, the 1976 and 1982 Ulster Rallies with Cathal and Bertie in a Porsche and Ford Escort RS1800, respectively. Having set it up, it was only fitting that Austin should win the Donegal International and he did it twice, in 1977 with Billy Coleman in the exotic Lancia Stratos HF and ten years later with Bertie in the Opel Manta 400. Another famous win for Austin and Bertie in 1987 was the Manx National Rally also in the Manta. Apart from these events, Austin enjoyed many other podiums and placings, far too numerous to mention here. More recently, Austin has been enjoying the more leisurely but equally competitive Pirelli Classic Marathons with Donal McBride in the trusty Austin Healey 3000.
In 2005, it was decided that Motorsport Ireland and the Motor Sports Association (MSA) through the Association of Northern Ireland Car Clubs (ANICC) would continue to pursue the dream of bringing the World Rally Championship to the island of Ireland in a joint North / South project and Austin was re-affirmed as Chair of the Steering Group overseeing the Rally Ireland proposals. Once again, Austin’s charisma and expertise came to the fore and, along with much hard work and burning of the midnight oil, the dream was realised with the very successful running of Rally Ireland in 2007 and 2009 as part of the WRC. Austin also served 4 years as Chairman of the ANICC and a further four years a Chairman of the Tarmac Rally Organisers Association (TROA).
Austin was also a Trustee of the Fisher Foundation, which was established in 2003 by Fisher Engineering as a permanent memorial to the lives of Bertie, Mark and Emma Fisher who died tragically in a helicopter accident in January 2001. The Foundation seeks to commemorate Bertie and Mark’s interest in rallying and Emma’s commitment to Christian service overseas by supporting those involved in these areas today.
Austin’s endeavours as a competitor and organiser have been widely acknowledged throughout the motorsport fraternity. His most prestigious accolade came in the form of the MSA / ANICC Lifetime Achievement Award of 2011 for “his outstanding contribution to motorsport in Northern Ireland as a Competitor, a successful International Rally winner, an International Rally Clerk of the Course and a Club Representative for over 50 years”. The citation also noted that “he was greatly respected by everyone in the sport where his enthusiasm, sportsmanship and attention to detail are legendary”. Locally, Austin was the recipient of the 2014 Fermanagh Herald Contribution to Sport Award and the 2001 Fermanagh District Council Service to Sport Award.
1964 was a very significant year for motorsport in Northern Ireland. Paddy Hopkirk won the Monte Carlo Rally in a Morris Cooper S, more importantly Enniskillen Motor Club came into being, but most importantly of all for Austin, in Cookstown on the 6th of August, he married the real great love of his life, Doreen. Austin and Doreen first met in 1959, and have since enjoyed over 52 years of wedded bliss. They say that behind every great man lies an equally great woman. Austin would be the first to acknowledge that it was Doreen’s devotion, sacrifice and encouragement that enabled him to reach the pinnacle of his sport. “She is my rock” says Austin. No mean hockey player and motorsport competitor herself in her earlier days and EMC Committee member from 1970 to 1974, Doreen was always fully supportive of Austin’s goals with a committed hands-on approach when family circumstances permitted. She took great pride in Austin’s achievements, was always ready to share the victories and equally ready to comfort in the disappointments.
Austin and Doreen’s marriage was further blessed by the arrival of their son, Nigel, in 1973. The records show that with Austin driving and Nigel navigating their Vauxhall Nova, they won the Novice Class of the Scallon Cup Navigation Rally organised by the Omagh Motor Club on the 17th of November 1989. In April 1991, Austin and Nigel were awarded 1st Place in Class 3 of the EMC Erne Safari Rally. More recently, the Curley / Frazer partnership has been again seen in rallying circles with Nigel navigating for Cathal’s son, Conor, with their efforts being encouraged by the two doting fathers.
Austin renewed his partnership with Cathal for one last hurrah at the 2004 Donegal Rally. Nigel and Conor also entered with Cathal’s other son, Ronan, in a third car. Had the story been written by Hans Christian Anderson, the result might have had Cathal and Austin winning with Conor and Nigel a close second and Ronan in third place. However, that chapter must have been penned by the Brothers Grimm as all three cars failed to finish the rally. Se la vie. But, as fate decided that Austin and Cathal would retire their Escort on Knockalla, a stage that Austin played such a big part in making into one of the most legendary and evocative stages of rallying in Ireland, maybe the fairytale did come true after all.
For those who attended the launch of the Bertie Fisher book, King Fisher, in Armagh last year or the Jimmy McRae night in Donnellys of Dungannon in 2015, it would have been hard not to notice the obvious respect and affection that Cathal Curley still has for Austin and it might just be appropriate that CB has the final few thoughts of this tribute. In Cathals’s own words – “my co-driver of 10 years, that giant of a man, Austin Frazer, whose co-driving skills and gentlemanly skills get my vote of 11 out of 10, yes in his case you can get 11 out of 10, but only his” – and inscribed on a beautiful crystal piece presented by Cathal to Austin with the immortal inscription – “Simply the Best”.

Local Veteran Grainger Splashes to Victory on Safari
On a very wet night veteran campaigner Benny Grainger, with David Howard on the maps, steered his immaculate Mini Cooper to a dominant win on The Elite Tyres and Service Erne Safari Rally. In absolutely atrocious conditions, not unlike that other Safari Rally [in East Africa] the Mini crew, who also won this rally back in 2013, hardly put a wheel wrong all night and dropped a mere 8 minutes to secure overall victory and claim Class 1 [Experts] as well.
The experienced husband and wife team of Ciaran and Rachel Carey in their reliable Nova was a distant second in Class 1 some 43 minutes in arrears! Ballinamallard navigator, David Johnston was on the maps with Sean Devlin in Sean’s latest acquisition, a Toyota MR2, which ran well all night despite the wind, rain and lots of ‘standing water’. They claimed second in Class 2 [Semi-Experts] and fourth overall. The Class 2 win went to John Henderson and Keith Somerville in a Toyota Starlet [which is now for sale!]. In the Novice Class, Class 3, the winners and sixth overall were Wayne and Ashley Boulton in their trusty Vectra with second place going to Billy Strain/Robert Hall in their Golf turbo-diesel. However Class 4, the Beginners Class, was best supported with some twenty crews in such diverse vehicles as Peter Jennings/Brian Hoy in a Mitsubishi Evo X, Mark McCaffrey/Conor Lappin in a Peugeot 405 and Bryan Gallagher/Gary McGlone in their Proton Gen 2.
Also pleasing for Clerk of the Course, Drew Wilson, was the appearance of several father and son crews including Gary and Darragh Sheridan in their Vauxhall Nova Sport, Mark and Kyle Thompson in their MX5 and William Graham senior accompanied by Willian junior in a Honda Civic. This along with other first-timers such as the Johnston brothers Simon and new Dad, Marc, who sat with Craig Scallon [Ford Focus ST] and Christopher Corry [Ford Fiesta] respectively. Bragging rights on the night fell to Marc who with Christopher Corry finished sixth in Class 4 two places above bother Simon. Mervyn Wilson normally is seen in a variety of MkII Escorts but wheeled out the Mazda 323 and his navigator Scott Thompson had an uncharacteristic ‘30’ after Time Control H which left them back in seventh place in class. Mark McCaffrey/Conor Lappin claimed fifth in Class 4 with the 405 Peugeot, now a veteran of night navigation rallies, coping admirably all night with the conditions.
Autotest man Jonni McDaid navigated Drew Chambers in their Peugeot 206 to twentieth overall on his first attempt on the maps. But there was no denying that the star of the night had to be the veteran crew of Grainger and Howard who had ‘cleaned’ the first half of the rally, not dropping any time till Secret Check 11 just after Time Control G in their iconic night navigation car, the Mini Cooper. Then they dropped only another seven minutes till the finish at Time Control L.
At the finish in Mahon’s Hotel in Irvinestown Benny gave credit to CofC Wilson and his team from EMC for running such an enjoyable and demanding rally with great roads and with challenges to suit all competitors from the ‘Expert’ to the ‘Beginner’. Wilson finished by thanking all the marshals for manning some thirty-five controls on the night, the twenty-eight crews making this entry the largest for some time for the Safari and he hoped this would continue for years to come. He paid special thanks to Fabian McAleer of Elite Tyres and Service for their sponsorship and use of their premises for the Start and Scrutineering.
Full results and photos can be found on EMC’s website www.enniskillenmotorclub.co.uk and facebook page.
This has to be ‘grassroots motorsport’ at its best: with no competition licence needed for the Beginners Class, an entry fee of just £20 and you can come along in any privately registered roadworthy vehicle.
Next event is Dungannon, Friday 10th with Cookstown on March 31st and Omagh on April 7th.

2017 Annual General Meeting & Awards Presentation
Enniskillen Motor Club celebrates 53rd AGM
Wednesday 18th January saw Enniskillen Motor Club [EMC] celebrate their 53rd Annual General Meeting in the Enniskillen Hotel. The first order of business on the evening was the annual award to a chosen local charity and for 2016 it was the Enniskillen branch of Cancer Research UK which was the recipient. Representing the charity was Heather Humphreys who accepted a cheque for some £1,050 from 2016 Vice-President, Austin Frazer and 2016 Chairman, Jackie Elliott. Heather thanked the Club for its generosity and wished them every good fortune in their endeavours in 2017.
Next was the distribution of the EMC Club Awards for 2016 and first up was Chris Melly who received the Navigator of the Year 2016 Award. Chris spoke warmly of his experiences in 2016 competing on EMC events with both Chris Armstrong in the powerful 2.5 litre Mk II Escort as well as with Hugh McQuaid in his 4WD Evo. Next recipient was Derrygonnelly man Connor Woods who collected the Junior Driver of the Year 2016; wheeling out both his Honda Civic and his Evo. The EMC Driver of the Year for 2016 was awarded, to huge applause, to Jonny Leonard also in an EVO. Jonny thanked the Club for his award and hoped the Club would enjoy yet another successful year with all their events in 2017. Clubman Eddie Maguire collected the trophy for the most valuable contribution to EMC club events in 2016
Then came the business of the election of new office bearers, committee members and event officials for 2017. But then as she was handing over the ‘reins’ the outgoing Chairman, Jackie Elliott asked for a minute’s applause in memory of the Club’s much-missed President, the late Keith Boyd. Elliott went on to say how successful 2016 was for all the events which the club ran. She thanked all the organising teams and all the committee members who worked so well together and hoped that 2017 would be ‘more of the same’. The new President elected unanimously on the night was the well-respected, veteran competitor, organiser and administrator, Drew Wilson. Wilson then paid homage to the late Keith Boyd and also to the outgoing Vice-President Austin Frazer who is standing down from committee after some 52 years of outstanding service. Austin is a founder member of EMC and has served in every capacity on committee continuously since 1964. The new Vice President is now veteran Ron Neely. Chairman for 2017 is Eamonn McGarrity, a veteran competitor and organiser, whilst Marty McGarrity becomes Vice-Chairman. Eamonn paid tribute to the hard work and enthusiasm of outgoing Chair Jackie and wished her well for 2017. Secretary will be Brian D’Arcy, Assistant Secretary – Sarah McDaid. Treasurer stays in the competent hands of Lorraine Simpson whilst Assistant Treasurer will be Alan Cullinan. Declan Gannon remains Competitions secretary with Wendy Blackledge as Assistant Competitions Secretary. In all some 18 members were then voted onto Committee for the 2017 season.

Motor Club Stalwart - Keith Gault Wins Top MSA Award
Motor Club Stalwart - Gault Wins Top MSA Award
Keith Gault, long-time committee member of Enniskillen Motor Club [EMC] has claimed the very prestigious award - MSA Volunteer Marshal of the Year 2016 in the individual category. Keith, who was proposed by the Motorsport Marshalling Partnership [MMP] here in N Ireland, was very excited and surprised to receive the award as he had no idea that MMP had put his name forward! The Motor Sports Association [MSA] is the sole national governing body for 4-wheel motor sport in the UK, as recognised by the world governing body the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile [FIA]. The MSA is a not-for-profit organisation [limited by guarantee] comprising around 750 affiliated clubs [including our own EMC] which are represented by 13 Regional Associations nationwide. In N Ireland EMC is affiliated to the Association of N Ireland Car Clubs [ANICC]. Keith will have to travel to the award ceremony in London in January to pick up his award. All at EMC and the wider rallying fraternity in Fermanagh wish him well for his big day.
Gault’s award – a first for an EMC member, comes after a lifetime of interest in motor sport and rallying in particular. Keith is a long-time committee member of EMC and is one of two committee members representing the club on MMP. Keith has been to the fore in marshalling on rallies in recent years undertaking such varied roles as Marshal and Sector Marshal on local EMC events and across the whole island volunteering in Monaghan, Cavan, Donegal Down and Sligo as well as on international events like the Circuit of Ireland, The Ulster Rally and Donegal International. Locally, as well as Sector Marshal for Omagh Motor Club’s Spring Rally and Bushwhacker Rally he has also been Chief Marshal on EMC’s May Day Stages Rally, Lakeland Stages Rally and Rally Time Trial. He is also one of EMC’s team of Timekeepers and Marshals who travel the length and breadth of N Ireland to officiate at Autotest and Targa Rallies. Keith has a well-deserved reputation for good humour and going the extra mile [including bringing along his trusty barbeque for service time snacks] to ensure any event he is involved with has an abundance of personnel. He has attended all training necessary to become an MSA licensed Marshal and using his contacts in MMP has assisted in facilitating ongoing training for EMC members via the MMP – most recently in the use of fire extinguishers at the scene of an accident. Gault is also renowned for coming up with some zany rally-oriented prizes for marshals he has enlisted to help on rallies. For example he has handed out a rear bumper from Frank Kelly’s famous Baby Blue MkII Escort – signed by Frank and he has also handed out pictures of Max Vatanen signed by both Max and his world famous Dad, Ari! So, a well-deserved award for this rally clubman who was just one of 6 individuals to be recognised nationally by the MSA in 2016.
Interestingly in the Club Category EMC itself was awarded ‘Highly Commended’ status – and whilst not in the overall three awards are just one of only three clubs who received this award out of a total of some 105 entries and nominations across the two main categories- Individual and Club.

Keith Boyd – A Sporting Appreciation
Within the motorsport community Keith Boyd was always regarded as a total gentleman, a man who always had time for others who were fortunate enough to come in contact with him, a man totally dedicated to furthering the cause of motorsport generally and Enniskillen Motor Club in particular. His passing has left a huge void in our chosen hobby and pastime but it can only be a fraction of the sadness and grief being felt by his beloved Midge, his daughters, Hayley and Jill, and his wider family circle at this time and our sincere condolences go out to them at their terrible loss. Keith’s courage and resilience in dealing with the terrible illness inflicted upon him has been an inspiration to all who have had contact with him over the last eight months. Typical of the man, never once was there a recrimination or complaint at the hand so cruelly dealt to him in the prime of his life. Right to the end, he only looked forward and the look of satisfaction on his face when he completed his role of Clerk of the Course for the Northern Ireland Championship Autotest round at St. Angelo in May was a joy to behold.
Born in 1957, it was during his formative years in Portora Royal School that Keith fostered his love of sport, particularly rallying and rugby union. Keith played in the second row for the school rugby team and, given his pride in his personal appearance and choice of natty clothing, it is difficult to visualise Keith leaving the field of play on a wet December day covered from head to toe in rich Portora mud! While Keith retained his love of the oval ball and became a dedicated disciple of Ulster Rugby, it was motorsport that really took his imagination in the mid-70s. Like many novices before him, he started navigating for other drivers in a variety of different machinery. These drivers included Ronnie Bryans, Alec Frazer, Ernie Campbell, Gary Millar, David Johnston, Raymond Johnston as well as the multiple Scottish Rally Champion Drew Gallacher with whom he finished 2nd on the Lakeland Stages Rally. He also competed in the USA on a number of occasions, navigating for Brendan Kelly. The role of navigator – looking after administration, entry forms, signing on and ensuring his driver is always in the right place at the right time – was ideally suited to Keith’s clinically ordered mind, organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail. Needless to say, his services were constantly in demand.
It was on a visit to Lochside Motors to have his Driving School Vauxhall Nova serviced that Keith met George Elliott. It was a meeting that grew into a sporting partnership for many years but also became a personal friendship spanning 34 years right up to Keith’s passing. Keith navigated with George for many years in a variety of machinery. One of the highlights of their early partnership was their win in the Vauxhall Chevette HSR on the Larne Rally in 1988. Keith also tried his hand behind the wheel on occasion and, with his great friend Gary Miller reading the notes, finished 7th overall in the Belcoo Quarry Stages in a Talbot Sunbeam loaned to him by George. After taking some time away from the sport, Keith returned to sit with George in a Ford Escort Mark 2 in the 1996 Circuit of Ireland finishing 23rd overall after being as high as 12th before a brake pipe failure dropped them down the order. This fine achievement was somewhat overshadowed by Keith’s collection of over £9,000 for the Marie Curie Cancer Charity through sponsorship, raffles and personal donations before, during and after the rally. His selfless concern for others less well off than himself influenced Enniskillen Motor Club (EMC) to initiate an annual donation to a nominated charity, a practice that continues to this day. Keith’s final event with George was the EMC Clubman Stages Rally in 1998 which they won overall in a Talbot Sunbeam 1600, after which Keith decided to devote himself to the administrative side of motorsport. However, in 2007 Roger Kennedy persuaded him to get back to reading the notes and they won their class in the Motorsport Ireland Border Championship in Roger’s Peugeot 306.
Keith was elected to the committee of Enniskillen Motor Club in December 1984 and over the following 32 years served as Vice-Chairman, Chairman, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, Director, and Vice-President. He has served as Clerk of the Course for many rallies, most notably the Lakeland Stages Rally, the Erne Safari and his beloved Northern Ireland Championship Autotest. In January of this year, Keith became only the third President of the Club, following in the footsteps of William Jackson and Austin Frazer, when he was elected to the post at the last AGM. It was an honour he was extremely proud to receive. He also represented the Club at the Association of Northern Ireland Car Clubs (ANICC) and became a member of the ANICC Council in 2002 as well as being appointed to the role of ANICC Autotest Championship Co-ordinator. Keith’s greatest public recognition of his expertise and devotion to motorsport was his nomination to the Motor Sport Association (MSA) Autotest Specialist Committee in 2010. This accolade was a fitting testament to Keith, the ultimate gentleman, the complete sportsman but, most of all, the ever loyal friend and confidant.
Keith fought the good fight, he has finished his last rally, has handed in his final time card and is on his way to being presented with his greatest ever award from his Maker.
May he Rest in Peace.
TUFFMAC TRAILERS LAKELAND STAGES RALLY

TuffMac Trailers Lakeland Stages Rally 2015 Launch
Enniskillen Motor Club [EMC] launched this year's 'TuffMac Trailers Lakeland Stages Rally 2015' at Lakeland Karting last week. A large group of sponsors and supporters gathered at the Lakeland Karting facility near Kesh to help the Club launch their round of the NI McGrady Insurance and Carryduff Forklift Rally Championship which this year is also a counting round of the Valvoline Irish Forestry Championship. As a result of their involvement in the Irish Forestry Championship the event will be broadcast on Motors TV[Sky 447], TG4 and subsequently on Irish TV [Sky 191]. The rally will take place on Saturday 5th September.
The EMC team have stuck to the format which proved so popular with competitors last year: 4 Stages run twice through the forests of west Fermanagh comprising a total of 43 Stage miles incorporating short road sections and thus a compact route with Rally HQ, Trailer Park and Service Park all located within the Enniskillen Area. Special rates are available for B&B at the Enniskillen Hotel: contact Mark Thompson on: 07851 145552 or Ronan Cox on 07813 176755.
Welcoming TuffMac Trailers and director Hugh McQuaid as the main sponsor for the event for 2015, team spokesman, Mark Thompson said that EMC was grateful to TuffMac for their input into the 'Lakeland', which is only one of two remaining Forestry rounds of the NI Rally Championship for 2015. Emphasising the aim of EMC to run a competitor-friendly event, team member Ronan Cox announced that this year's TuffMac Trailers Lakeland Stages Rally will encompass an on-line payment facility for the first time.

Lyons scorches to dominant win at Lakeland Tours Autotest
Robin Lyons showed tremendous form, in his rapid Mini, to win the 2015 Lakeland Tours Autotest, promoted by Enniskllen Motor Club, with some 11 seconds in hand over multiple-champion Steven Ferguson at St Angelo last Saturday. On a day perfect for autotesting Clerk of the Course, Keith Boyd, ran four tests simultaneously on the concrete surface of the Severfield-Fisher Engineering yard. In third overall position 7.5 seconds behind, was Paul Mooney [Nova] while Paul Blair [Striker] was almost literally on his bumper a mere 0.7 seconds in arrears in fourth.
Twenty-two drivers started the competition at noon and treated the small band of Autotest fanatics to a scintillating display of exciting, even breathtaking display of car control over the next three and a half hours. This was round 5 of the Aughrim Filling Station ANICC N Ireland Autotest Championship and local interest was focussed on Enniskillen man Jonni McDaid and his Dad, Tommi, in their shared Mini competing in Class ‘C’ – Small Saloons. Unfortunately for Jonni he came up against an on-form Lyons who never put a wheel wrong all afternoon. McDaid took second in Class ‘C’ some 39.3 seconds behind Lyons with Norman Ferguson [Steven’s Dad] a close third just 1 second adrift with Tommi McDaid in fourth a further 14.8 seconds in arrears.
Jonni claimed 10th Overall while Tommi finished 14th Overall.
Try as he might, Ferguson in his Mini-based Special, just could not best Lyons who completed the final test just 0.9 of a second ahead of the hard-charging Ferguson.
Ferguson did claim first in Class ‘A’ – FWD Sportscars and Specials with Guy Foster in second and Peter Grimes in third.
Class ‘B’- RWD Sportscars and Specials was the domain of the ‘kitcar’. Paul Blair took the honours here in his immaculate red Striker with the black version of Ashley Lamont powered by a glorious-sounding Cosworth engine finishing 23.6 seconds behind and Gareth Dillon in third a further 20.7 seconds back.
Class ‘D’ – RWD Large Saloons [ the domain of the Vauxhall Nova], was won by Paul Mooney [Nova] with David Thompson and Mark King second and third respectively, both in Novas.
George McMillan encountered problems with the gearbox in the Nova he shared with son Jamie but managed running repairs to complete the event. Mark King also overcame a driveshaft breakage in his valiant efforts to claim his third in Class ‘D’.
At the awards ceremony in Café St Angelo Keith Boyd thanked long time sponsor Lakeland Tours. In an effort to encourage participation he also awarded veteran competitor Paul Phelan the special award as ‘The Highest Non-registered Competitor’. He finished by thanking all the officials and marshals whose efficiency and enthusiasm made the day run very smoothly indeed.

May Day Stages Rally 2015
‘Erne Skip Hire & Recycling May Day Stages Rally 2015’
Enniskillen Motor Club [EMC] welcomes our new sponsor of the May Day Stages Rally, local skip hire and recycling company: Erne Skip Hire & Recycling. Director, Declan Magee announced that the company is only too glad to be associated with EMC’s annual St Angelo-based rally taking place as usual on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May.
The rally, now called, ‘The Erne Skip Hire & Recycling May Day Stages Rally 2015’ will see up to 130 rally cars blast round St Angelo Airfield on Bank Holiday Monday with the first car away at 9.00am. This year, CofC, Ron Neely has introduced a few changes, most importantly that each crew will get two laps of the airfield per stage and then completes 6 Stages in total making up almost 24 competitive miles of tyre- blistering action for the enjoyment of the large crowds of spectators.
The main field, made up of 120 crews, will consist of WRC cars such as potential winners Martin Cairns’ Subaru S14 – winner of Bushwhacker 2013, James Gillen also in a Subaru WRC S9 with local crew Nigel Hodgins and Caroline Smith also in an Impreza up against no fewer than 14 Mitsubishi Evos. Most noteworthy of these is local man Jonny Leonard with Mum Geraldine again calling the notes. This could well be a winning combination on the day but will have Tyrone crews, Gareth Mimnagh and Ashley Dickson, Dermot O’Hagan, Andrew Bustard and Patrick O’ Brien all out in various guises of EVOs vying for the win as well!
The much-awaited 2WD battle will see the usual battle of the Escorts with Brookeborough man Chris Armstrong already in fine form this year the firm favourite. He is also tipped to be well within the top ten after the 6 Stages.
But spectators will also be able to see the next generation of Campbells take to the airfield tarmac with Dara and Diarmuid Campbell, sons of Declan steer Dad’s 2-litre Pinto-engined Escort. Another crew worthy of note is local top Navigator, Barry McNulty swapping seats to pilot a Peugeot 106 Cup with Amanda Grace [daughter of comic legend, Brendan] on the notes.
Other interesting classic rally vehicles which are familiar to fans of a certain age [over 35ish..] will be those steered by Conor Lavery and Declan McKeown two powerful BMW M3s. These rapid RWD machines will be a welcome alternative to the more usual machines already mentioned. Historic veteran, Mervyn Johnston again wheels out his trusty Austin Mini Cooper ‘S’ with John Golden beside him this time and not Wendy Blackledge. Jonni McDaid’s Peugeot 106 and Davy Forde’s beautifully restored Puma should also quicken the pulse of any die-hard rally fan. Damian McAleer will wheel out his Gp N Toyota Corolla, the machine which enjoys cult status among the ‘Drift’ crew, whilst ex-Stock-car driver, Willie Fanin continues to keep his immaculate Chevette ‘between the ditches’.
In addition to this will be 10 Junior crews in similar 1000cc cars fighting it out ‘tooth and nail’ for the F1000 Junior Championship title, this event being a counting round of the NI Championship. Drivers are aged 14-17 with mature Co-Drivers and this is definitely hotly contested rallying at its best. We may be watching a budding Kris Meeke on the way up!
So, with all the normal hot food, toilet facilities and stalls selling bargain rally wear etc, spectators will once more enjoy a fabulous day’s rally action on Bank Holiday Monday.

Event Preview
This Friday 6th March sees Enniskillen Motor Club run their annual Night Navigation Rally – The Maxol @ McAleer’s Erne Safari Rally. This rally, running in several different guises since 1965, is a counting round of the McGrady Insurance NI Navigation Rally Championship for 2015.
This rally was first run in October 1965 and was known simply as The October Rally becoming The Erne Safari rally in 1966 and so it has remained to this day. Back in 1966 the event ran over 4/5 November and consisted of two loops: firstly, 180 miles of purer navigation and secondly, another loop consisting of 30 miles including 5 Special Tests in the forests PLUS two other Special Tests: one around St Angelo airfield and one over private ground – phew! [This year’s ‘Safari’ will not exceed 70 miles in total and with no Special Tests..].
Entries are beginning to roll in and Event Secretary Wendy Blackledge revealed that as well as reigning NI Champions Benny Grainger/David Howard, an interesting entry for this year is Veteran Dungannon man Derek Smyth with his wife Anne on the maps. Derek competed on ‘The Safari ‘ as far back as 1971 as Navigator and though he will pilot his immaculately restored Mini Cooper ‘S’ on this occasion he is a past NI Champion Navigator. The current entry list at time of going to press includes the following:
Benny Grainger/David Howard – Seat Ibiza
Leslie Hawe/Gareth Hawe – Seat Leon [Winners of round 1 – Tour of the Mournes]
Ciaran Carey/Rachel Carey – Vauxhall Nova
John Henderson/Jonathan Henderson – Nissan Micra
Derek Smyth/Anne Smyth – Mini Cooper ‘S’
John Henderson/Keith Somerville – Toyota Starlet
Billy Strain/Robert Hall – Subaru Impreza
With some 14 crews registered for the NI Championship EMC are sure more entries are in the post. Clerk of the Course, Drew Wilson, is keen for volunteers to contact him to help man the Controls need on Friday night. Therefore; contact Drew on 07712 734300 or come along to The Enniskillen Hotel on Wednesday evening at 8-9.00pm and ‘sign on’ to be part of a super event.

Earlier this week we had the opportunity of making the Patterson Pacenotes for the Lakeland Stages in County Fermanagh. Enniskillen Motorclub is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary this year. Part of the celebrations include an extended Lakeland Stages with a discounted entry fee of £196.40 to reflect the founding year of the club – 1964. What a great and novel idea. The first batch of notes were posted today (Friday) along with the safety DVD, so those competitors already entered can do do some pre-event preparation. |

The club have asked if we could post a short sample video of the stages just give a taster of the event which runs on Saturday 6th of September. The route includes some old classic Lakeland stages, two 11 milers plus in effect a new stage, not run since the early nineties. Enjoy the video.
Enniskillen Motor Club feel very honoured to be in possession of a number of Bertie Fishers Trophies. It is with great gratitude to Gladys Fisher that the club can announce that a number of winners at this years Samdec Security Lakeland Stages will receive a beautiful piece of rally history and be presented with a trophy belonging to the late great Bertie Fisher. Only one of these trophies will be a perpetual trophy so the remainder will be the winners to keep. More details to follow.

The eagerly anticipated and usually hotly-contested 2WD battle has really moved up a gear for the upcoming 'Maxol @ McAleer's May Day Rally' on Bank Holiday Monday 5th May.
Rally fans are in for a real treat as McGirr in his RWD Starlet has, not only Jim McKenna in his Escort, but also veteran Dessie McCartney to contend with, in his dramatic Darrian GTR290 - a tarmac specialist vehicle originating from Wales, designed specifically to offer a creditable 2WD challenge to the 4WD boys!
Also entered, in Citroen C2 R2, is another McCartney - this time Garth. Favourite for Overall honours, with Jennings side-lined after his Circuit accident, has to be Eugene Donnelly in his super Subaru S14. Donnelly put on a spectacular display of controlled driving last year and there's nothing to say he won't deliver again this year!
As entries soar past 90 it looks as if the horde of local crews entered will also add to the usual thrills and spills associated with St Angelo Airfield. A trio of Campbell brothers, all in Mk II Escorts, as will be Mervyn Wedlock and the likes of Andrew Bustard, plus Sean McQuaid and the exciting Chris Armstrong will all strive to keep McGirr, McKenna and McCartney 'honest' on the ultra-smooth new tarmac of St Angelo.

MAXOL@McAleers Erne Safari Navigation 2014 - Rally Report
by Gerry Cavanagh
Enniskillen Motor Club ran the 49th Erne Safari Navigation Rally, with an entry of 28 crews, sponsored once again by McAleer’s Spar Irvinestown, on Friday 7th March.
Favourites were last year’s winners, Benny Grainger/David Howard - Peugeot 206. But, at 2 were current NI Champions, Leslie Young/Lewis Boyd – Vauxhall Vectra. There was a welcome return for Gary Sheridan with Lloyd Cochrane - Proton Compact, at no 5. The final Class 1 [Experts], at no 7, turned out to be the on-form crew of the night: James Woods and Chris Ragg – Ford Focus, who eventually went on to claim the victory.
Class 2 [Semi-Experts] had four entrants with Ronnie and Aaron Mitchell running first in Class and at 10 ‘on the road’ in their Mazda MX5. Heading up Class 3 [Novices] was Stewartstown man Sean Devlin with Ballinamallard veteran, David Johnston, - Mazda MX5. Class 4 [Beginners] was the best supported Class with some 12 crews tackling a reduced route of 62 miles compared to 88 miles for Classes 1 & 2. Running at no. 20 was, fourth in Class last year, Astra crew Eddie and Ronan McCaffrey. At no. 25 on their first time out were Darrell Harron and daughter Sarah - Auris with William Graham and his son William Junior at no. 26 - Saxo. Other all-Fermanagh crews were; Mark McCaffrey/Matthew McGowan [another first-time Navigator], Kevin/Kris Farrell - Proton Compact and Mervyn Wilson/Benedikt Bastion -Mk II Escort. Sitting in the left seat with Ian Howard was Peter Jennings - Mazda MX5. A classic navigation car was the Ford Anglia of Gerry Cavanagh at no 18 with PJ Mulrine on the maps.
The early pacesetters in the Experts Class were John and Jonathan Henderson in the Micra dropping only one mark by Time Control C. Hot on his wheels were Woods/Ragg and Grainger/Howard only a minute behind. The Young/Boyd pairing were having a poor start by their standards dropping some 14 minutes at this stage to fifth behind the Nova crew of Carey/Muldoon. But the Hendersons dropped a total of 22 marks between TC G and F, a tricky section, which also caught out Sheridan/Cochrane, who dropped 22 minutes. Henderson/Henderson finished 7 minutes down on winners Woods/Ragg – Ford Focus. Young/Boyd were unable to make up for their errors earlier on, ending up third, 2 minutes behind. In Class 2, by TC F, a pattern had become clear; Mitchell/Mitchell and Latimer/McElroy were out in front and only 2 minutes separated them at the finish. In third was the crew of Neil Anderson and Kathryn Vaux- Fiat Seicento, a further 35 minutes back.
Leaders in Class 3 early on were Brian Hanna/Paul Forsythe, the only Class 1 and 2 crew ‘clean’ at TC C. Unfortunately a poor finish over the final three Time Controls cost them dearly, loosing the Class win to the Devlin/Johnston pairing.
In Class 4 teenager Ronan McCaffrey guiding his father Eddie – Astra, claimed the Class win ahead of Charlie Dunleavy/Roy Lindsay - Honda CR-V. Stephen Dickson/Aaron Johnston came third. McGowan navigated McCaffrey to fifth in Class. But the sensation of the Class was the pairing of 13 year old Sarah Harron with her Dad Darrell - Toyota Auris; a very creditable 7th in Class. William Graham junior, giving his father William the instructions, ensured the Saxo crew also made it home.
